Nissan To Bring Back Datsun As Budget Brand For Emerging Markets
Just about every gearhead has a memory, a story or some emotional connection to the Datsun brand. I think like most, I had a childhood lust for the Datsun 280ZX, it was my dream car for a time. Now, 30 years (my how time flies!) since Nissan retired the Datsun brand (1981), it appears they are making the decision to bring it back!
Almost every major automaker wants to sell super-cheap vehicles, especially in emerging markets like India, Russia and Indonesia. The problem for many automakers is settling on a brand strategy that will allow them to sell these cheap vehicles without causing perceptive damage to their primary parent brand. For Nissan, the answer has been under their noses the whole time.
The Datsun brand will be exclusively used as a budget brand for these emerging markets. No further confirmation from Nissan or details are known at this time but we’re anticipating the first ‘new’ Datsun could hit the streets sometime in 2014.
